Animal Husbandry and Poultry Project
Joshua’s vision is a livestock project supporting orphans, widows, and vulnerable youth in Nakivale by raising chickens, goats, and pigs for food and income. This approach provides families with a reliable source of eggs, meat, and income, and unlike one-time donations, it continues to generate benefits without ongoing external funding.
The first phase focuses on poultry, beginning with 70 improved chicks and all necessary resources, such as a coop, feed, equipment, vaccines, bedding, and cleaning supplies. Poultry is a practical starting point because it requires less space and lower initial investment than larger livestock, while still providing families with an immediate and tangible source of food and income.
If successful, this phase will expand to include goats and pigs, as outlined in Joshua’s original plan. This will provide more families with a sustainable source of food and income for years beyond the initial support.
About the local leader
Joshua Mushoko is the youngest of NBG’s local leaders and a dedicated advocate for community empowerment in Nakivale. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, he has spent most of his life in the settlement and is committed to supporting the community that raised him.
He envisions a community center that will offer computer training, animal husbandry programs, and a flower garden for meditation and mental health workshops for refugees. This reflects Joshua’s belief that lasting empowerment must address both practical and emotional needs.
NBG is proud to support Joshua’s efforts to build a more connected and empowered community in Nakivale, beginning with this poultry project as the foundation for his broader vision.
